There comes a point in any grower’s life where they become curious enough to try venturing into the business side of cannabis growing.
However, the jump from growing for your own use to commercial isn’t as simple as doubling your production.
There are many things to consider when growing cannabis commercially, the most important being choosing the best cannabis strains for commercial growers.
Top Strains for Commercial Growers
Regardless of if you’re new to the business or an experienced commercial grower, the cannabis strains below are some of the best genetics for commercial use.
What strains do commercial growers grow? That’s a great question. But first, I’ll explain how I chose the strains I recommended.

What Makes a Cannabis Strain Ideal for Commercial Use
Average Yield
Under the best conditions, you can expect a yield of around 500 grams or 17 ounces per cannabis plant. Those numbers will skyrocket if you choose one of the best cannabis strains for commercial growers, such as Critical Mass and White Widow.
These strains have high yields, which in turn lead to an increase in profit.
However, to know if you’re making a profit from these high-yielding strains, you’ll have to carefully look into the expenses of growing them.
Variables like growing outdoors or indoors will affect both your yield and the overall cost.
There’s also the matter of lighting for indoor setups and supplying enough nutrients for your plants to develop properly.
The type of growing medium you choose is also a key variable. For example, experienced growers know that using a hydroponics system can double your yield, but this system requires significant skills and costs to build.
Despite its benefits, I don’t recommend this option to new commercial growers if you aren’t already growing hydroponically.
Potent Marijuana Bud
Potency Level
Potency level is the amount of THC in a strain. Nine times out of 10 buyers will ask about the THC levels in the strain you’re growing and the product you’re selling.
This is why one of the best weed strains to sell is Gold Leaf for its high potency and high THC levels.
However, the cannabis community is changing as more consumers understand the importance of terpenes. These are the chemical compounds responsible for marijuana’s rich aroma and flavor.
So, does this mean that people are looking for more taste in their kush? Not necessarily. Terpenes and other cannabinoids, like CBD, are important.
When these different chemical compounds work together, consumers get a more potent high. It’s called the entourage effect, and it means you shouldn’t just focus on THC levels when cultivating your strain.
Take time to develop the terpenes level and CBD levels if you want higher potency.

Genetics
The importance of genetics to commercial strains is more than just having the trait of producing better yields with high levels of THC.
Other favorable traits include resistance to different marijuana diseases and acceptance of high-stress training (HST). These traits save money on the cost of losing a plant to disease or tainting a harvest with algae and mildew. There’s also added efficiency with HST. Cannabis strains that are more accepting of HST produce even higher yields.
A good example of genetics at play is autoflowering cannabis.
Autoflowers have a short grow time. They’re also known for not responding well to high-stress training.
Most commercial growers also want seeds with high germination rates. Higher-quality seeds are more likely to germinate. This decreases the amount wasted when planting.
Marijuana Shelf Life
Shelf Appeal
Nowadays, there’s competition and a market for marijuana products’ shelf appeal. It’s one of the top priorities for commercial growers. Gone are the days when knowing whether weed was good was by smelling it.
If you want to have an edge in the market, consider the following:
Buds – When it comes to indica strains, the buds must be tightly packed together and dense. You generally avoid buds that are sparse to the point that their stems are showing.
Color – Healthy and well-cured buds will keep their shade of green. The only exception is in the color of their trichomes.
Trimming – As a rule of thumb, trimming the leaves off your bud makes it far more enticing to consumers. It shows that delicate care was put into packaging them.
Trichomes – A good bud looks like it has a layer of frost. Milky white trichomes tell consumers it’s rich in cannabinoids.
Best Strains For Commercial Growers
Best Strains for Commercial Growers: Our Top Weed Picks
Critical Mass Strain
Critical Mass Feminized
Effect
Critical Mass is known for a lot of things, and one of those things is being potent.
Depending on how much you consume, it can either help you relax or straight up put you out of commission for the day.
It’s good for those who want to wind down after a hard day’s work. The potency can also be therapeutic.
Growing
Critical Mass flowers period for 6-8 weeks. You can expect to harvest fully-ripened buds earlier than most strains.
This strain is easy to grow and pest resistant. So it’s receptive to both indoor and outdoor setups. But one obstacle in growing Critical Mass is that it’s more susceptible to mold than other strains.
For Commercial use
Critical Mass gets its name from the fact that its buds are heavy and dense, to the point that branches have a serious chance of snapping off.
This is especially true when this strain is grown indoors as your yield gets bumped up to a whopping 27oz (765g). SHOP CRITICAL MASS
What’s the Critical Mass strain yield?
21 oz per plant
Big Bud Strain
Big Bud Feminized
Effect
If you want something to truly put you to sleep, then Big Bud is the strain that’ll help. If it doesn’t knock you out, it will help make you feel more relaxed.
It’s a great strain for those who suffer from insomnia and a good kush for relieving stress.
Growing
Ideally, this hardy and resilient commercial marijuana strain should be grown indoors if you want the best yield possible.
However, you can still grow Big Bud strain outdoors and produce a considerably large harvest.
Similar to Critical Mass, this strain is known for growing dense and heavy flowers. So although this strain is known for having strong stalks, use strings to support it.
For Commercial use
Big Bug weed has a generous yield. Its average yield of 25oz (708g) can increase depending on the growing medium and techniques. It’s also a popular strain due to its 26% THC content. SHOP BIG BUD
What’s the Big Bud cannabis strain yield?

Amnesia Haze Strain
Amnesia Haze Feminized
Effect
Amnesia Haze puts the active in psychoactive compounds. With a noticeable lemon citrus flavor, it boosts energy and makes you feel both creative and happy.
Amnesia Haze is a great strain for those who can’t shake off the lethargy that they feel on a day-to-day basis.
Growing
Although it produces a lot of buds when grown outdoors, Amnesia Haze is susceptible to pests.
That’s why commercial growers often grow this strain indoors, even though it cuts its yield from 25oz (708g) to 21oz (595g). Indoor growing reduces the grow time and allows for an earlier harvest.
For Commercial use
If you can brave the outdoors and grow Amnesia Haze, you’re looking at 25oz (708g) or more per plant. You don’t have to worry about surplus either.
Because of this strain’s effects and its flavor, it’s popular among consumers and is one of the best cannabis strains for commercial growers. SHOP AMNESIA HAZE
What’s the Amnesia Haze strain yield?
25 oz per plant
White Widow Strain
White Widow Feminized
Effect
With roots in Netherlands’ coffee shops, White Widow boosts energy and makes you more talkative. It’s no surprise that this is a potent go-to strain since it elevates conversations and makes customers more social.
Growing
Some growers find White Widow difficult to grow since it has fickle temperature requirements and nutrient distribution. Here’s a simple breakdown of those requirements:
70°Fahrenheit (21° Celsius) during the day
60°Fahrenheit (15° Celsius) during the night
20% Nitrogen, 15% Phosphorus, and 15% Potassium during the vegetation phase
15% Nitrogen, 15% Phosphorus, and 15% Potassium during the flowering phase
However, my store includes multiple versions of this strain and the highest quality genetics, giving you the greatest chance for success.
For Commercial use
White Widow has a considerable yield: 21oz (595g) per plant – and it’s ready to harvest after it flowers in 7-9 weeks.
It’s one of the best weed strains to sell because of its established history, you’ll have no trouble finding people to buy it. SHOP WHITE WIDOW
What’s the White Widow strain yield?
21 oz per plant
Bruce Banner Strain
Bruce Banner Feminized
Effect
Bruce Banner produces an overall feeling of happiness and euphoria that persists throughout the day. Be warned, though, the strain got its name from that ‘incredible’ guy that turns green so expect the effects to hit just as hard as he does.
Growing
In terms of difficulty, this strain isn’t as fickle but still requires a great deal of attention and care. It can be grown in soil or hydroponically and is known for being highly resistant to diseases.
This allows it to grow well either outdoors or indoors.
For the harvest, it usually takes 8-10 weeks for it to finish flowering. This is typically in October if growing outdoors.
For Commercial use
The Bruce Banner strain gets its name from its synonymous green tinge and powerful, immediate effect. The strain has a high THC content of 25~29%. SHOP BRUCE BANNER
What’s the Bruce Banner strain yield?
21 oz per plant
Gold Leaf Strain
Gold Leaf Feminized
Effect
Bearing a fruitiness in its earthy flavor, Gold Leaf offers a heavy feeling that spreads across the body and knocks you out for the rest of the day. This amazing, flavorful strain is lovely for getting much-needed rest or just to relax.
Growing
After Gold Leaf flowers in 9 weeks, it is ready to harvest. You’ll get a max of 23oz (652g) for indoor grown plants and 28oz (793g) for outdoor plants.
Outside of its generous yield, this strain is also relatively easy to grow.
For Commercial use
Gold Leaf has a high THC content of 21% and a high CBD content of 3%. I created this strain to take advantage of the entourage effect, making it feel a lot more potent than you’d expect. SHOP GOLD LEAF
What’s the Gold Leaf strain yield?

FAQs About Best Commercial Strains
What are Autoflowering seeds? (and should you use them?)
Autoflowering seeds are a product of selective breeding in cannabis. They’re known for their short grow time and ability to grow year-round, especially in indoor setups. However, they’re also smaller plants than regular cannabis, which means their yield is significantly less as well.
What are the best weed strains to sell?
To know the best weed strains to sell, you need to know your local market. What strain is currently popular? Are people looking for products with high THC? To make answering these questions easier, do some online research.
How many strains should you grow?
As a general rule of thumb, you should grow an assortment of strains. This casts a wide net and allows you to figure out what the clientele is in your area. From there, you can adjust based on what your customer likes, but ideally, you will grow around 8 plants to start things off. I’d recommend 2 Indicas, 2 Sativas, 2 Hybrids, 1 CBD strain, and 1 Novelty Strain.
